Dying (Fabric) Naturally

dye/dī/

noun

a natural or synthetic substance used to add a color to or change the color of something.

I get a kick out of telling people I love to dye. I enjoy taking in a brief moment of their bewilderment, before I chime in that I’m talking about dying fabrics. The facial expressions are priceless and it makes me giggle every time.

When I first discovered natural dyes, I felt like an excited little kid who wanted to sit at the table and color all day. But instead of crayons I get to play with berries, bark, roots, dried flowers, dried vegetable skins, and more. It can all make color.

Beautiful color.

And the best part? I get to be creative while being environmentally responsible. Dyestuff can be reused several times, before it is exhausted. Once exhausted, it can be disposed of responsibly, mostly going into the compost bin.

When I realized the artistic freedom I had in this medium, and that it paired so well with my ever growing pro-Mother Earth stance, I was hooked.

I look forward to bringing you along on my dying journey ;)
