So many terms get thrown around in the sustainable space. Heck, what does “sustainable” even mean?! Spoiler alert: it has a lot of different definitions. But for today, let’s talk about “soil to soil” and why that’s important at Petal + Ash.

The way we currently produce and use/throw away  is not sustainable. Meaning, in short, if we keep it up we are headed for some doom and gloom with Mother Earth. But before the climate anxiety sets in (yes, it’s a real thing and we feel it too), know there are things we can do to enact real change before it’s too late. Reducing waste and emissions requires many solutions, as it’s a multifaceted problem. While we need the big guys to enact change, the little guys (that’s us!!), can help move the needle, by showing change is possible!! 

So what does this have to do with lingerie?!

Most of us wear our fave bra and panties wayyyy too long (ahem, guilty as charged), though ultimately over time they stretch out and loose function. So where do your bras and panties head when you’re done with them?

There are some great organizations that offer a second life to new or gently used bras, but what about the old worn out ones? Or your old panties (hey, no judgments here!!). Ultimately most of our used undergarments eventually make their way to a landfill. Once there, they can take up to 200 years to decompose. And that whole time, methane gas is being released into the atmosphere. In short, nasty gasses that speed up the climate crisis. 

So how can we divert our favorite undergarments from landfill? 

One great option is by making them soil to soil. How do we do that? By using fibers and dyes that are natural and can compost at garment end of life. And that’s exactly what we are doing at Petal + Ash. Our materials come from nature, and when you’re done with them (after lots of loving wear) you can safely return them to nature!  Our wirefree bras will be 96% compostable (we are working on a hook and eye closure that will also be compostable). Our panties will be 100% compostable. 

Remember, compostable does not mean disposable!! Our lingerie is being constructed by one of the best in the biz, and is built to last. We want you love love, and wear, your Petal + Ash undergarments for as long as you feel supported by them. But once that day comes to an end, because eventually it will, you can feel a little bit better about your personal impact, and know that you are working to be a part of the solution in the clothing waste crisis.
