Definitions. Sustainable Style.

I started a series on Instagram that I think is not only important, but also necessary.

Over the past year, I’ve been doing deep dives into the world of sustainability and how it relates to the fashion industry. One of the biggest issues with the sustainable movement is that there’s no set definition, no set parameters, for what it means to be sustainable in the industry. On one hand, it means that sustainability can be a lot of things––which allows for a great many ways to tackle the problem. But on the other hand, there’s no uniform approach.

I think one part of this problem is that we need to better educate the consumer on what sustainability is, and what to look for when shopping for products––be it a toothbrush or a new pair of pants.

With this in mind, I’ve launched a series of educational posts to the Petal + Ash Instagram page.

Today’s post defines sustainability, as it pertains to the fashion industry.

The term sustainability can encompass a lot of things. The definition above is broad, but it gives a succinct and full understanding of the term, specific to the fashion industry.

There are a lot of components to consider when making sure fashion is sustainable. Here are just a few...

🌷How are the fibers sourced?

🌷What is the process from fiber to fabric?

🌷Are the garments manufactured responsibly?

Remember, sustainability is a journey, not a destination. Look for companies that have sustainable practices in place, and are looking to continue to grow and improve.

Thanks to @circular_fashion for the fabulous definition.
